From the Lake Manager

After a longer than normal draw down, it is finally time to allow the lake to start filling again. As Mark Rosenkranz mentions in his update (here), contractors working on the Blue Heron Sewer Rehabilitation Project are nearing completion of their work. While they may be working for another two weeks, their lowest point of connection is more than three feet higher than current lake level. It is unlikely that the lake level will rise that much before they have demobilized, but we will manage the refill in such a way that allows them to complete the project and demobilize safely. We have received several inquiries about the rate of refill. It really depends on rainfall. Each inch of rain equates to about six inches of lake rise since about 65% of the city’s watershed drains to the lake. We know from experience that capturing December rainfall provides a much greater chance of the lake refilling quickly. It looks like we will start off with a bang considering the forecast for this weekend. For those of you who are in the process of constructing waterfront improvements; please make sure your contractor is removing any construction and/or demolition debris from the lakebed promptly to avoid having it float away during heavy rains.

Among other lake-down projects, we are just completing a minor dredge project utilizing a wet-dredge pumping solution in the Woodside Circle/Pioneer Court area. We have also taken advantage of the sewer project to remove hundreds of yards of silt from Blue Heron Bay. We should realize both navigational and water quality benefits from both of these projects.

As the holidays approach, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you the best for the remainder of 2023 and into the new year! Please feel free to reach out if there is anything I can do for you.
